The ABC has announced the selection of Laura Tingle as ABC Global Affairs Editor.
Tingle will replace former Global Affairs Editor, John Lyons, who moved into the newly created role of Americas Editor in March to cover the Donald Trump presidency. Lyons has been Global Affairs Editor since 2022.
The ABC said that Tingle will be “contributing expert reporting and in-depth analysis of world events across all platforms and able to be deployed to enhance our coverage on the biggest global stories.”
The appointment marks a significant transition in her career which has included serving as political editor of The Australian Financial Review, and working for The Australian, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. It also marks the end of her political analysis on ABC’s flagship current affairs program, 7.30, a role she’s held since 2018.
The ABC says that Tingle's appointment was the result of a competitive selection process.
On her new role, Tingle said, “I started my journalistic career at a time when Australia and the world were being challenged and transformed by the forces of deregulation and the freeing up of global trade.”
“Forty years on we are in even more uncertain times. It’s so important that the national public broadcaster has Australian eyes on the world putting the significance of major global events into context for local audiences.”
Though Tingle’s previous reporting experience has focussed on Australian politics, she has often addressed international issues—especially those that affect Australia.
ABC Friends welcomes the ABC’s appointment of Laura Tingle to this key role, confident that her four decades of political journalism will bring a lot of value.
