Maria Ressa has been a journalist, mostly in the Philippines, since the 1980's. In that time she has witnessed a range of political leaders, some developing ways in which to assert political and social control, in pursuit of personal power and self-interest. This has been achieved largely through government press releases, partisan media companies, and more recently the social media of the internet. For an interesting coverage of how techniques in mis/disinformation have been developed and spread through the internet, Maria has recently written a book - How to Stand Up to a Dictator. If you don't have the time to read Maria's book, there is a one hour interview with her on The Conduit, and a book review in The Guardian.
Maria was also a joint winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for her positive efforts within the media ... and standing up to dictators. For those who are interested, a very readable and informative book. A reminder of the importance of independent public broadcasting.
