Step into a Science Journalism Fellowship with ABC Radio National and help bring big science and health ideas to curious Australians. Here’s your chance to spend six months immersed in a globally celebrated science unit, bringing your own project to life.
Develop, research and produce a series of original stories for the ABC Radio National science unit, covering topics in science or medicine, with a focus on audiences under 40. You’ll pitch bold ideas, research compelling topics and produce original content across podcasts, digital articles and social video—experimenting with fresh formats and using audience insights to shape your work.
You’ll collaborate closely with an experienced, creative team and produce fact‑checked, engaging storytelling that meets ABC’s editorial standards.
About You
If you’re a sharp storyteller with a passion for science, strong production skills and a knack for turning complex topics into clear, compelling content, this is your chance to make an impact and grow your craft alongside an experienced, collaborative team.
To thrive, you’ll bring experience telling science or health stories for general audiences, accomplished production skills in audio, video or digital writing, and a solid understanding of contemporary multimedia trends. You’ll be curious, collaborative, comfortable juggling deadlines, and committed to producing content that reflects the diversity of Australia. If you love turning complex ideas into accessible, surprising and engaging stories, this fellowship is your chance to make an impact.
Pitch your best idea to the ABC for a roughly six-month project in podcasting, social media and/or online reporting — then join the Radio National science unit to make it happen.
Pitch your ideas!
The ABC are looking for our next Science Journalism Fellow to dream big and deliver a standout project — something that tells a compelling series of science stories across one or more platforms, such as:
- Podcast — for example, a season of our narrative show Science Friction
- Social media — like a series of vertical videos for ABC platforms
- Written digital stories — articles or interactives for the ABC News website
We’d love to hear your idea.
What’s the subject you want to dive into? What stories would you tell? Which format feels right for your project? And who’s the audience you want to reach?
