June originally became involved with ABC Friends in 1994 when she approached then Victorian President, Janet Powell, about pushing the ABC to produce more programs for children.

Before June knew it, she was announced as President at the ABC Friends Victoria AGM, a role she would hold until 2000. And these were very busy and effective years as June led campaigns to fight funding cuts by PM John Howard. Weekly visits to the post office at this time regularly led to her carrying a sack of outraged mail back to the office.

Speaking to Peter Monie, a later ABC Friends Victoria President, June said that a highlight of her presidency was the packed Melbourne Town Hall rally to defend the ABC – attended by so many people that there was an overflow into the Athenaeum Theatre next door and loud speakers for the crowds on the street. At the end of the rally, then ABC Managing Director, Brian Johns, shook June’s hand with tears in his eyes. Rallies followed in Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide.

“June served ABCFV as a virtually full-time volunteer, putting aside her own academic work, to oversee the expansion of the movement throughout Victoria, where membership soon approached 5000, and make the Melbourne office the base for a national committee,” Peter recalls.

June stepped down as President in 2000 but remained vice president for several years and was always available for advice and information.

In 2022, June was awarded Honorary Life Membership of ABC Friends Victoria.
