Western Australia AGM 2024

Current ABC journalist and Metro News Editor Andrew O’Connor will join us after the business of the AGM.

Andrew has been a journalist for almost 40 years, most of that time with ABC News and current affairs as a reporter, producer, presenter and trainer.

O’Connor’s career began as a cadet reporter at The Border Watch newspaper in Mount Gambier, South Australia, in 1985. He moved into regional television with SES8 Mount Gambier as a newsreader before joining ABC News in Adelaide in 1990.

Andrew began working with the 7.30 Report in 1991 and spent six years with the program as a reporter, field producer and executive producer. After working in the aviation industry as a safety and quality manager, he returned to ABC News in 2001, working in a variety of roles in Perth. He was executive producer of ABC radio news from 2002-10, multiplatform reporter from 2008-11. He presented 7.30 WA from 2011-14 before covering WA state politics as a photojournalist and digital reporter.

Between 2011 and 2023, Andrew coordinated the training and mentoring of cadets through the ABC News Cadetship Program. He currently works as the WA Metro Editor for ABC News in Perth, leading a team of 70 journalists, camera operators, production and administration staff. The role has focused on the digital transformation of ABC News, building new audiences on digital and social platforms while seeking to sustain audiences on traditional broadcast services.

Refreshments will be provided following the meeting.
