Background

Originally a marginal seat, Wannon was won by former Liberal PM, Malcolm Fraser in 1955 and has been consistently Liberal ever since.

Situated in the Western Districts, the rural electorate covers 34,000 square kilometres and includes Hamilton, Ararat, Portland, Port Fairy, Warrnambool, Port Campbell, Camperdown, Colac and Lorne.
Wannon is Victoria's second largest electorate, covering 15%.

Wannon has consistently produced Liberal two-party preferred results around 10 percentage points higher than the Liberal Party's Victorian result. A 6.2% swing away from incumbent Dan Tehan in 2022 moved the seat from a comfortable 10% margin.

Tehan grew up in rural Victoria. He worked in the Department of Foreign Affairs, as an adviser to several Howard Ministers before being elected in 2010. Tehan was appointed Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment in December 2020.
