Woodford Festival proves the ABC still matters: especially to young people

ABC Friends QLD volunteers held a stall at the Woodford Folk Festival, held every December in Queensland, and once again the festival proved why it holds such a special place in Australia’s cultural life.

Carefully designed by our Sunshine Coast Branch Chair, Charmaine, with the steady hand and practical leadership of site captain Raine (Brisbane Branch), our stall was welcoming, lively and purposeful. From the moment people wandered in, there was a sense of openness and curiosity—exactly the conditions needed for genuine conversation and connection. Music, discussion and shared values blended seamlessly, creating an atmosphere that felt both celebratory and reflective.

One of the most heartening outcomes was the strong response from ABC supporters. Many people took the time to stop by and express their appreciation for the ABC and what it represents:

  • trusted journalism
  • diverse storytelling
  • and a shared national conversation.

These were not hurried or passing comments, but thoughtful expressions of support, often grounded in personal experience.

It was clear that the ABC continues to matter deeply to people across different walks of life.

Particularly encouraging was the number of younger people who called to share their favourable feelings. Their enthusiasm challenged the notion that public broadcasting is only cherished by older audiences. Instead, their voices showed that the ABC still resonates with new generations who value independence, creativity and reliable information in an increasingly crowded media landscape.

For ABC Friends, the results were deeply satisfying. The festival demonstrated that when the setting is right and people are invited into conversation, support for the ABC is not only strong but growing. The Woodford Folk Festival offered more than enjoyment—it reaffirmed a shared commitment to culture, community and public broadcasting at its best.

Thanks to all our volunteers.
