Mac’s next of kin, Simon Bowler, has written a heartfelt farewell that you can read below.
Dear Friends of Mac, We lost a truly unique person on Tuesday night. His death will leave a hole in many lives; a loss tempered by the fine warm memories he leaves. For some the memories may be recent. For others they may be decades old. He was kind, generous, a deeply moral man and the smartest person I have known . He was also cantankerous and prickly, indifferent to many social norms and did not like large social gatherings. We disagreed on many things but he was always a rational and reasoned debater. He loved the Friends of the ABC and was a keen supporter of the Brisbane Dialogues. He particularly liked to spend time with young people and was invested in their opinions and future. I have booked a funeral for us to farewell him at the Mt Gravatt crematorium Monday Feb 26 11am with sandwiches and a drink afterwards. No religion, no celebrant. I will lead off with some memories and then invite anyone else to share their thoughts. Let me know if you would like to speak. If you know anyone who would like to participate please copy and pass on.
