About Us
Tasmanians became active in support of the ABC in the early 2000s with keen groups of members, initially known as Friends of the ABC, meeting regularly in both the North and the South of the state. The name was changed to ABC Friends in 2014.
Members and supporters are spread throughout the state and the organisation hosts a number of events each year for the benefit of members, and to draw attention to issues affecting public broadcasting. Every year, for example, ABC Friends Tasmania, celebrates the anniversary of the birth of Australian independent journalism, when, in June 1824, Andrew Bent published his newspaper in defiance of the colonial government's censorship regime.
ABC Friends Tasmania is an Incorporated Association managed by a Committee of volunteers elected each year at the Annual General Meeting. The Committee is closely connected to the membership and, as a community-based organisation, ABC Friends Tasmania Inc. is wholly dependent on the support of its members and supporters. You can read our Rules here.
ABC Friends Tasmania Inc. is a member organisation of the national body - ABC Friends Ltd, and operates both independently and collaboratively with Friends organisations from every Australian State and Territory on national strategies and campaigns aimed at securing adequate funding, and maintaining the independence and integrity of the ABC.
ABC Friends is not aligned to any political party and operates fully independently of the ABC itself.
